The true mystery of the medallion must be that it allows 8-year-old Beijing children to suddenly emit sounds that are remarkably similar to inspiring sentences, spoken in lightly accented American English. Hm. This is a forgivable, indeed even enjoyable quirk of the film. No kung-fu movie is supposed to beseriousan American action flick, so many viewers may find the unself-conscious, childlike air of many parts of The Medallion to be careless and hokey. To prove legitimacy, a viewing of Jet Li's Drunken Monkey may be necessary. Jackie Chan and Lee Evans do wonderful flip-flopping of the role of Straight Man, and Claire Forlani delivers a sweet, charming performance, blessedly in her own voice. Julian Sands suffers gallantly through some truly bad dialogue, but he is the baddie, and somehow it all fits into place.
This was just a bad movie. It reeks! I turned it off with about 40 minutes left. The action was boring. It felt like I was watching a bad movie from the early 80's. Avoid it! Even if you are a Jackie Chan fan, avoid it! Why do the movie gurus even put this stuff on film? Probably because they know an idiot like me might give it a chance and check it out. They obviously could have done a better job from the ground up. Watch Shangai Noon or something if you need a Jackie Chan fix. I don't even think I saw Claire Forlani in the movie before I turned it off. My wife was so happy when I said the words "ok, let us turn this poor thing off". It burns my buns that movies like this still get the time of day to see actual filming.

The working title of the film was "Highbinders". In the original plot of the film, those who were given power by the medallion became a Highbinder. Snakehead's original goal in the film was to create an army of Highbinders to join in his crime organization.<br/><br/>According to the commentary by the editors, "The Medallion" was not American-made, although Columbia-TriStar bought the distribution and editing rights worldwide except in Japan, France, and Hong Kong (but these three countries retain the American cut of the film, the only cut ever made). The original cut was meant to be around 108 minutes, and the plot of the film explained Snakehead's crime organization of human smuggling, and the deaths that occurred from it,wellhis desire to create an army of Highbinders to aide his crime organization. All of this, however, was cut to center on the medallion.
